I've been an avid wargamer since college. Miniatures wargaming is the simulation of military battles (historic, fantasy, or sci-fi) using painted miniatures, model terrain, dice, rulers, and lots of rules.
Here are a couple of images of a fictional 1812 engagement between Russian and French forces.
The French army is advancing on a strong Russian defensive position. French infantry will sieze the manor in order to secure their left flank.
The French deploy a grand battery in the center of the field. They hope to weaken the enemy center in preparation for an offensive on their right.
The French launch a major attack on the right. Cavalry lead the way. The Russians recoil from the onslaught.
The French left is too weak. Cossacks charge into their flank. Uh-oh.
Russian infantry follow up the Cossack charge. The French left is turned and the line crumbles. Victory to Russia!
